IN RETROSPECT

There's simply no substitute for a great screenplay. No matter how much special effects computer wizards emphasize in a film, it doesn't make a film top-notch. Michael Bay's latest popcorn film, Transformers, fails to make the grade precisely because of that. It's a big-budget, brainless, money-laundering motion picture similar to other Bay's films such as Armageddon, and Pearl Harbor (which bombed and sank).

The positive aspect of Bay's filmmaking style is that he knows how to consistently blow things up. In a queer way, he's the most apt director to helm Transformers. But sometimes he overdoes it, resulting in a film that's all bangs and flashes, and unfortunately, without substance. Admittedly, the effects are monumental; a breakthrough in graphics and sound editing. Never have we seen such technological magic since Peter Jackson's King Kong (which by the way is so much better because of a certain human element to it, that is scarcely felt in Transformers).

Alas, Transformers willingly places itself in the noose. With paper-thin characters grossly underdeveloped, and bad humor punctuated at inappropriate moments, I wouldn't care less if the Decepticons actually defeat the Autobots and wipe out the human race as well. Such is the lack of commitment to the script and screenplay that no amount of computer wizardry can compensate its faults. Yes, Transformers is a wet dream for fanboys. But for the common folks, you might as well be watching a car compactor at work in a junkyard.
